Skill + Personality – things that drive you bat sh*t = Your new biz. My Skills:
–Marketing (offline, online)
–1/2 dozen creative ideas a day, at least
–design chops (workhorse variety)
–Training and coaching -love it
–I like writing (but see my bat sh*t list)
My Personality:
–Outgoing, but needs time alone
–Not a huge fan of noise (a year of meningitis will do that)
–Love to bounce ideas off someone, ANYONE! Hey you! I’m talkin’ to you!
–See above, I don’t mind working alone but I really prefer having a partner or posse
Things that drive me bat sh*t:
–Editing my own writing
–Being told I have typos in my newsletters (because I can count on it)
–Writing cover letters (are you seeing a theme here?)
–Clients who love icons or colors that I don’t, um like all that much. I’m not the kind of designer to fight it (unless it involves Comic Sans or Papyrus font, then the gloves come off) but I might not link to the work from my portfolio. I’ll think of it as my sad money. Don’t write off sad money, it can’t all be sexy.
Now your turn. Categorize the skillz that pay the bills. My mom, Gail Harris, got laid off from a sales job last fall and went through this process, maybe not so “formally” but it made the difference between her deciding to pursue real estate instead of recruiting. She’s a bit on the introvert side. Recruiting drew on her sales skills, it wasn’t a great match for her personality. I’ll have to ask her about the bat sh*t list.

This is the part I find hard. Identifying your skills is hard. For instance thers may think I know a lot about websites but I know I don't - compared to others. Hell, I don't even know html.
I would like to freelance and set up an online business but what skills do I really have? I think I am stuck in the old school world where paper qualifications are a necessity. But this is the new world right?
